Catalyzing a new
nuclear energy ecosystem

Enabling the rapid expansion of safe and secure nuclear energy to
help satisfy growing global demand for reliable, cost-effective,
carbon-free heat and power.

About

Collaborating for a
sustainable future

The Nuclear Scaling Initiative (NSI) is a collaborative effort of Clean Air Task Force, the EFI Foundation, and the Nuclear Threat Initiative to build a new nuclear energy ecosystem that can quickly and economically scale to 50+ gigawatts of safe and secure nuclear energy globally per year by the 2030s.

NSI’s plan for revolutionizing how nuclear energy is constructed, financed, and regulated will advance climate goals, spark economic development, expand energy access, and ensure that nuclear technology is used for only peaceful purposes.

Our mission

Enable the rapid expansion of safe and secure nuclear energy to help satisfy growing global demand for reliable, cost-effective, carbon-free heat and power.

Our vision

A world where nuclear energy propels progress toward climate, energy security, and economic development goals without leading to more nuclear weapons.

    FAQ

    Learn more about NSI

    Who works at NSI?

NSI is led by Steering Committee Co-Chairs Armond Cohen and Dr. Ernest J. Moniz. Cohen also serves as executive director of CATF and Moniz as CEO and president of EFIF and co-chair and CEO of NTI. The rest of the NSI team comprises staff from CATF, EFIF, and NTI under the management of Executive Director Stephen D. Comello ([email protected]).

What is NSI’s Global Advisory Board?

NSI’s Global Advisory Board is a group of global leaders in policy, finance, energy technology, and security who share NSI’s belief in the promise of nuclear energy to advance the climate, economic, development, and security goals that are critical to our planet’s survival. The board provides expertise and strategic guidance to NSI in support of its mission to increase the pace of safe and secure nuclear energy deployment.

Where does NSI’s funding come from?

NSI is hard at work implementing our global strategy for scaling nuclear energy thanks to a foundational gift from Joe Gebbia and Isabelle Boemeke. They also initiated a $5 million matching challenge to catalyze additional philanthropic support, which the Quadrature Climate Foundation and other generous donors have already contributed toward. NSI is actively seeking additional donors for the challenge; please contact Adam Wagner ([email protected]) to learn more.

How can I engage with NSI?

Are you an expert in nuclear energy, policy, finance, or regulation? We want to hear from you. NSI welcomes engagement and partnership with groups across the nuclear ecosystem. NSI has been committed since our inception to serve as a platform for collaboration. We are proud to collaborate with a range of civil society organizations to advance our workstreams. Please send inquiries to Amy Patrickson ([email protected]).
